OUR MISSION

4,000+ South Dakotans need IDD residential services, yet demand far outpaces availability. Available pathways address high-need medical conditions - no solution for adults who have the independence to live and work.

Go Beyond is a residential community in Sioux Falls, SD designed to complement existing state-supported services by offering additional flexibility and highly personalized, person-centered care.

Go Beyond exists to create a supportive, purpose-driven community for young and middle-aged adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs)—one that blends independence, meaningful engagement, and individualized support. We are building a place where people can thrive beyond traditional systems, and where families can trust that their loved ones are supported today and into the future.

Our Story

Go Beyond began with David — a young man with intellectual and developmental disabilities who, like many others, desires independence, meaningful relationships, and a true sense of belonging. As their son, David inspired Dan and Sharon Rykhus to imagine a living environment where adults with IDD could build community, grow in confidence, and experience both freedom and appropriate accountability. After searching for an organization that could meet David’s unique needs — and finding limited options that fully aligned with their vision — Dan and Sharon felt called to create something new. Go Beyond was born from that conviction: that individuals like David deserve not just support, but opportunity, dignity, and a community where they can truly thrive.

FAQs

Why Go Beyond?

Families consistently share the same concern: after school-based services end, options become limited and fragmented. Go Beyond was created to bridge that gap by offering a thoughtful balance of independence, community, and support—reducing caregiver burnout and creating long-term sustainability for both residents and families.

What are the first priorities for Go Beyond?

Phase 1, which we are currently in, focuses on listening, learning, and feasibility. During this phase, Go Beyond is engaging families, experts, and community partners to better understand needs, assess potential models of support, explore locations and funding options, and evaluate long-term sustainability. This work will inform a clear decision on how—and when—to move forward.

How can people support Go Beyond?

Go Beyond is built through collaboration. Families, donors, service providers, and community leaders can support the initiative by sharing insights, partnering on best practices, and contributing to feasibility efforts through funding, advocacy, or engagement.

Is Go Beyond modeled on another organization?
